Mornings begin gently at the Burlington Hotel’s cafe, with damn good pour-over coffee and fat slices of cornbread drizzled with manager Earl Flewellen’s homemade honey—a topping so sweet it helped put Port Costa back on the map. A couple of years ago, Flewellen started processing and selling the honey on the first floor of this Victorian hotel. “It got so popular, the owner asked me to help run things,” he says. Flewellen and partner Samuel Spurrier are now restoring the 19-room hotel one guest room at a time, an undertaking that led to co-ownership of The Bull Valley Roadhouse next door.
