Silver Lake is 5 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Many of the neighborhood’s newest shops and restaurants are near Sunset Junction, just southeast of the corners of Santa Monica and Sunset Boulevards. Other shopping districts include the corner of Hyperion and Rowena Avenues.

DINING

Café Stella. Go here for Julia Child-style French cooking (i.e., lots of cream sauces). Has a good selection of wine by the glass. 3932 W. Sunset Blvd.; (323) 666-0265.

El Conquistador. This longtime neighborhood favorite, famous for its steak, halibut, and camarones, now finds itself surrounded by Silver Lake’s newest hot spots. 3701 W. Sunset; (323) 666-5136.

Say Cheese. Home of warm goat-cheese salads, blue cheese spread on walnut bread, and an overwhelming selection of gourmet cheeses. 2800 Hyperion Ave.; (323) 665-0545.

Tantra. Very hip, sensual restaurant with a lush and lively bar scene. Dishes are a mix of old and new Indian cuisine. 3705 W. Sunset; (323) 663-8268.

 

SHOPPING

The Den of Antiquity. Look for the banjos and croquet mallets hanging from the rafters of this tiny shop. 3936 W. Sunset; (323) 666-3881.

Serifos. Unique gift shop with Venetian masks, pricey journals, Asian DVDs, baby accessories, and one-of-a-kind jewelry. 3814 W. Sunset; (323) 660-7467.
