Welcome to Sunset’s 2001 New Gold Country Idea House!

The very notion of creating an Idea House presents endless possibilities. We start first with the land and set about to discover the possibilities it has to offer. Then we carefully select the Idea House Team, a talented group of local experts who help to create the ultimate wish list of a home suited for a Western lifestyle and then work to translate it into a Sunset Idea House.

Inspired by both the beautiful, rustic nature of the Sierra Foothills and the historic Empire Mine’s Bourn Cottage designed by Willis Polk (circa 1900), architect Kevin Patrick O’Brien incorporates plenty of drama and surprise into this beautiful home.

Upon entering the Vestibule, you are greeted by the Great Hall and its 16-foot high, exposed beam ceiling. The breathtaking space is flanked by two stone fireplaces, and a wall of windows provides a sweeping vista of the oak-studded backyard.

A colorful paint palette in the Kitchen and Breakfast Room harmonize to create an inviting space. These two light-filled rooms feature natural stone, ceramic tile, custom craftsmanship, and all the modern conveniences of a professional cooking environment. For wine connoisseurs, the hidden Wine Shaft (next to fireplace on the left side of the Great Hall on the floorplan)is one of those added surprises unique to this special home.

Before viewing the home’s second level, please be sure to take a moment to linger on the Veranda off of the Family Room and take in the beautiful views surrounding the home.

Many hours of dedicated hard work went into creating this Idea House. Special thanks to our Idea House Team and designers for making this idea a reality: Jeremy Bernau, Kevin Patrick O’Brien, Janice Stone Thomas, Ron Allison, Christina Limberakis, Fray Below, Dan Gregory, and Ann Bertelsen.

Enjoy your tour of the Idea House. We hope that it inspires you and helps you see the endless possibilities in your own home.
