Western Home Awards 2003–2004

The entries are in — winners
to be announced in August

The Western Home Awards Program, cosponsored by the AIA and Sunset every two years since 1957, draws public attention to outstanding residential design in the 13 Western states and western Canada. (See 2001 winners here.)

Categories include Cabins and Vacation Houses, New Communities, New Houses, Remodels, and Restorations.

ELIGIBILITY

Entries are located in and be the work of registered architects in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, or western Canada. Only houses or projects completed since January 1999 were eligible.

CATEGORIES

1. New Cabins and Vacation houses, including both Custom-designed and Speculative or mass-produced houses.

2. New Planned Communities emphasizing single-family houses where at least one neighborhood has been completed (land use, master planning, and building economy will be carefully considered).

3. New Custom-designed houses under 1,500 square feet.

4. New Custom-designed houses over 1,500 square feet.

5. New Speculative or mass-produced houses under 1,500 square feet, including infill houses.

6. New Speculative or mass-produced houses over 1,500 square feet, including infill houses.

7. Residential Remodels involving structural change, modernization, and additions.

8. Residential Restorations of older buildings with an attempt to preserve original architectural integrity.

TYPES OF AWARDS

The jury may award an entry an Honor Award, or a Special Award for special accomplishments in a limited aspect of the entry. This year, jurors will be asked to pay particular attention to cabin design; community planning; inventive approaches to small spaces, tight lots, and limited budgets; regional differences; sustainability; and energy efficiency.

The jury will consider each entry on its own merit and is empowered to grant as many awards as the submissions justify. To ensure anonymity during judging, names on entry binders will be masked.

If you have questions, call (650) 324-5632.

CURRENT ENTRANTS' BINDERS DUE MARCH 24

Entry application forms must have been postmarked by Monday, February 10, 2003. Upon receipt of the entry application, the committee forwarded an 8 1/2- by 11-inch binder for each project. The binder contains transparent sleeves for displaying a maximum of 23 inserts, back-to-back. All material submitted — photographs, drawings, and descriptive material — shall be inserted in those sleeves. It is not necessary that all sleeves be filled. Completed entry binders must be postmarked by Monday, March 24, 2003.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARDS

Awards will be announced in the August, 2003 issue of Sunset, then publicized in other media. Whenever possible, awards will be announced and certificates presented at AIA conferences.
