Designer Hugo McCloud
Decorate with surprise
3 trade secrets from rising design star Hugo McCloud

Sculpture, plants, and furniture are all part of the mix at McCloud Design, a new atelier in Sausalito, California, where surprising juxtapositions provide compelling new ways to look at your garden. At the helm is up-and-comer Hugo McCloud, 28, who runs the shop with his mother, landscape designer Irene Forster. The space is an ever-changing medley of statement plants, found objects, and McCloud's own handcrafted fountains and waterscapes. "A lot of what we have are things that people would pass up on the street until you see them in the right environment," he explains. We picked a few of his favorite things to consider when designing in your own home; 415/331-2178.

1. Mix & unmatch
Seek unpredictable combinations, such as this vignette of white orchids next to bleached coral. (Choose faux coral to be eco-responsible.)

2. Pare back
A single plant, like this bromeliad, or a commanding water feature can be the focus of an entire space. "You don’t need much to stir people's senses."

3. Go green on green
Palms, staghorn ferns, and lush-looking rushes all add to the store's atmosphere of controlled abundance.
