| The 15x24-foot structure in the center houses a kitchen and bathroom. Three 12-by-14-foot tent cabins serve as bedrooms and storage room. Finishing touches include custom pre-fabricated barbecue counter near an outdoor dining area, bench seats, firepit, and a covered daybed for lolling.

Picture yourself lounging on a large deck off a cozy tent cabin. Your best friends are gathered around the deck’s cabana, bunkhouse, barbecue, dining table, and fire pit. There’s a central cookhouse nearby, and a bathroom with a hot shower. Ocean colors and natural materials create a stylish calm.

You’re in the 2007 Sunset Summer Retreat, a vacation getaway you can create in stages--and a wellspring of outdoor living ideas for your current house. The project followed the popularity of past home attractions such as the modular Glidehouse in 2004, Sunset Breezehouse in 2005, and our Celebration Weekend Idea House in 2006.
Our 2007 concept turns the conventional home inside out. Most rooms are open-air modules that can be added over time. Only the 15-by-20-foot cookhouse/bathhouse at the center is a permanent, lockable structure.
The surrounding modules--bunkhouse, master bedroom pavilion, and game tent (with lockers for storage)--are wood and canvas structures from Sweetwater Bungalows.
It’s as if we took a cabin apart and put the various rooms near the heart of a summer home. The tent cabins make it far less expensive than building a large cabin--and a lot more fun.
