Understanding earthquakes in the West

The 100th anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake is putting safety back in the news. Disaster will come again, as the 1989 Loma Prieta and 1994 Northridge quakes proved. (See our map of the West's big quakes.)

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there is a 62 percent likelihood that a major quake will hit the San Francisco Bay Area in the next 25 years. Preparation will be the key to riding it out.
