Take the West to Heart

Heart disease remains the nation's most serious health hazard. Simple steps inspired by living here can help you prevent it.

It's easy to take the heart for granted, especially if you're a woman used to hearing about heart problems in men. But cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of both women and men in this country. Nearly 1 million people in the United States die of it every year, according to the American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org). More than half of them are women.

Lucky for us all, our region is rich with ways to reduce major risk factors: Harvests of beneficial produce speed healthy and delicious meals to the table. Beautiful trails inspire active weekdays and vacations. And our soothing gardens help balance busy lives. In this special section, Sunset, in partnership with the AHA, offers everyday ways to protect yourself and your family by stocking up for healthier meals, making smart food trades, getting active, and feeding the soul.
