Bromeliads sizzle with color
These houseplants are easy to maintain

Slideshow >>

Intensely colored bromeliads are ideal houseplants — they thrive on neglect, yet their blooms typically last 8 to 12 weeks. Plus, their leaves provide year-round appeal. These variegated Guzmania bromeliads, which grow from 1 1/2 to 2 feet tall, can be found at nurseries and at home and garden stores.

'Bandera': White and green leaves; orange-red flower. 'Candycane' : White and green leaves that turn pink toward the center; red flower. 'Fanny': White and green leaves with a pinkish tinge; reddish purple flower. 'Fire Cracker': White, green, and red leaves; dark red flower. 'Fool's Gold': Creamy white and green leaves; yellow and orange flower.

Display plants indoors in bright, indirect light. Water them when the top inch of soil feels almost dry to the touch — about every two weeks. Also add water to the cupped leaf bases.
