Repeating Impatiens and Coleus provide visual appeal to covered walkway

Stroll down a covered walkway at Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo, Washington, and you’ll quickly understand the visual power of repetition: Each wooden column has a basket of impatiens hanging at eye level and a big pot of coleus and trailing bacopa at the base. The floral colonnade was put together by Gail Halsaver of Foxglove Greenhouses in Kingston, Washington (360/297-0410). For the impatiens, she hung wire half-baskets (10 in. wide, 5 in. deep), lined them with moss, then planted a dozen seedlings of Super Elfin white impatiens through the sides and four Super Elfin red plants on top.

For ground-level display, she used 20-inch plastic pots with a faux terra-cotta finish. She put coleus in the center and let bacopa trail around the sides.

The plants are watered by drip-irrigation lines as needed and given a supplemental feeding of liquid fertilizer about twice a month. On Kitsap Peninsula, overlooking Agate Pass, Kiana Lodge is a day-use facility open by reservation for private parties, corporate events, and weddings.
