Give yourself the ultimate valentine this month: a stronger heart and a longer, healthier life. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in this country — for women as well as men. It develops over time, sometimes going undetected for years, and each of us is at some point on its continuum. The good news: Heart disease is largely preventable. In this special section, Sunset, in partnership with the American Heart Association, suggests ways to reduce your risk by eating better and getting more active.

If you need help staying on the path, think red. It’s the color of some of the West’s most heart-friendly foods, such as tomatoes, berries, and red wine. And it’s the bold reminder in the AHA’s “Go Red for Women” campaign. You can get started with the ideas on these pages. And visit www.americanheart.org for more info.
