    Ventura County Wine Trail

    Often known for its wonderful weather, beaches, agriculture, and proximity to Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, Ventura County has quickly become a wine country destination for visitors and locals alike. Today, ten family-owned wineries span the area, producing award-winning wines and a personal touch not always found in larger wine regions. Many of the tasting rooms are run by the owners and winemakers themselves, giving guests a unique and intimate experience. Wineries on the trail range from an antique winery on a working 2,000 acre cattle ranch complete with relaxing picnic grounds, to a state-of-the-art winemaking facility with all the modern amenities.

    Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance

    Paso Robles was named for its local oak trees, El Paso de Robles, “The Pass of the Oaks.” The name was recorded in 1828 as a rancho where the padres of San Miguel sowed wheat, and the city was founded on the rancho in 1886 and incorporated in 1889. Today the city’s name is commonly shortened to Paso Robles. The Paso Robles American Viticultural Appellation (AVA) is home to more than 180 wineries and 26,000 vineyard acres focusing on premium wine production. The distinct microclimates and diverse soils, combined with warm days and cool nights, make growing conditions ideal for producing more than 40 wine varietals from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, to Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne, to Zinfandel, the area’s heritage wine variety.

    The Santa Cruz Mountains has been recognized as a premium wine producing region since the late 1800's when local winegrowers first began to win acclaim for their wines in national and international competitions. The number of wineries and the acreage planted in the Santa Cruz Mountains has increased dramatically in recent years as the area has become recognized as a unique grape-growing region. The individual microclimates, marine influence, mountain terrain, distinctive soils, and low crop levels, all contribute to the production of intensely concentrated fruit. There are now over seventy, small, family-owned wineries in the region. The small size of these operations allows the winemakers the opportunity to handcraft their wines and to maximize the potential of the grapes.
