Ensure quality sleep

A good sleeping pad will totally transform your sleep. If you have a spacious tent, a raised camp cot will also make for a super-comfortable night (or a nice nap among the redwoods).

2 /12

Bring a headlamp for hands-free camping chores in the dark

Headlamps are inexpensive, and they make a big difference—especially if you need to pitch your tent after dark. You’ll need both hands for that!

3 /12

Start planning and getting ready to go a week ahead of your trip

Designate one corner of your garage or closet as your “camping corner.” Keep all of your camp gear there, and it will be that much easier to find before your next trip.

4 /12

Make ice blocks for your cooler at least 24 hours ahead

Ice blocks keep food cold much longer than cubes alone. Use large, refreezable ice packs, like the ones made by Arctic Ice, or freeze water in large, flexible-sided Nalgene canteens.

Take off shoes before you get in the tent

But keep them under the rainfly. That way, they won’t get wet if it rains at night.

7 /12

Check with your campground before bringing in firewood

The campground may not allow fires, and they might not let campers bring in wood from outside the immediate area.

Plan for happy hour

After all, you’re on vacation, right? Camp Sunset includes easy cocktail recipes, like Margarita 1, 2, 3, and ideas for near-instant appetizers.

9 /12

Serve a fancy dinner

This will be the meal that you’ll talk about for years to come. Pick something that’s special but doable, such as pan-seared steak with mushrooms, or one of the other 55 recipes from Camp Sunset.

Don't use soap on the cast iron

Know how to tell a good campfire story

Enjoy this unplugged time in the outdoors, where everyone gets to be the audience—and the star.

Leave no trace

Leave the campsite cleaner than you found it. Mother Nature will thank you.
