How to Protect Plants from Frost

Garden editor Johanna Silver and staffer Lauren Dunec demonstrate how to frost-proof your garden

When the forecast calls for freezing overnight temperatures, you’ll need to take a few measures to protect any tender plants like citrus, succulents, or tropicals. First you want to water all of the plants in your yard except for succulents – let those dry out. Next apply a thick layer of mulch on top of the plants to protect their roots. Move any light potted plants to a south- or western-facing wall or overhang to keep them warm and provide protection. You can also use glass cloches to create mini greenhouses. Protect citrus trees by creating a frost cover tent with a frost blanket or burlap and some stakes. Be careful to ensure that none of the leaves touch the covering.
