Winner: Customized for comfort

This house on wheels was designed and custom built by the owner out of the desire to own a home without a mortgage or commitment to any particular location. Like a boat, it uses every available inch to maximize storage. Like a larger home, it features high-end stainless steel appliances, sustainable bamboo flooring and beetle-kill pine ceiling, and custom hand-planed woodwork throughout. The owner lives in the space with his girlfriend and dog, and says that despite its size, it truly is his dream home.

Mobile home by the sea

Located steps away from the ocean, a 1970s-era mobile home was remodeled to take advantage of the dramatic views. Frameless, folding glass doors along the rear and length of the home, along with interior operable wooden shutters, allow controlled movement of light and air. The interior flooring extending out to the patio surface emulate the color of sand, which reinforces the seamless relationship between inside and outside spaces. The result is an open plan with views continuing from room to room, opening onto each other, and serving as both a very private residence and one able to accommodate large gatherings.
