How to Make Stuffed French Toast

If you're looking for an over-the-top brunch dish for a celebration, this is just the ticket.

If you’re looking for an over-the-top brunch dish for a celebration, this is just the ticket.

Sweeten up your Sunday brunch European-style. This scrumptious stuffed French toast recipe calls for Neufchatel cheese, a soft, crumbly varietal from Normandy resembling cream cheese in taste, and crème fraiche, an alternative to sour cream that pairs exceptionally well with fruit.

Start by mixing the cheese and cream together in a large bowl. Add honey and lemon zest. Thinly slice strawberries from top to bottom, adding them to the mixture. Rather than using fresh bread, let it sit out overnight so it’s slightly stale and crisper. This recipe calls for day-old challah bread.

Spread the strawberry-flavored cream onto one slice of bread. Top with another slice to make a sandwich. In a separate pan, add whole milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk until combined.

Next, place unsalted pistachios in a food processor until the nuts break into crunchy bits. Dunk the sandwiches in the milky liquid and then coat both sides with pistachios. Sprinkle sugar atop the nuts.

Heat vegetable oil and unsalted butter over the stove. Cook sandwiches on both sides over heat until warm and toasted. Cut each sandwich in half and serve with a side of strawberries. For an extra decadent bite, top the French toast with berry syrup.

Celebrate the weekend with this French toast. Your sweet tooth will thank you!
