Here’s How Much People Spend on Kitchen Renovations

If you’re thinking about taking on a kitchen renovation project this year, you might want to look at these numbers first. According to the 2017 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends study, most people budget and spend between $25,001 and $50,000 for their kitchen renovation.

For the study, experts surveyed 2,700 Houzz users who were currently renovating their kitchens, have recently completed the project, or are planning to tackle it this year. They found that the number one reason people had for renovating their kitchens was that they could “no longer stand the old kitchen.” Other motives included having some extra budget to take on the project, or to customize their recently purchased home.

The Houzz experts also looked at the most popular features to refresh—with countertops being the most popular. More than 80 percent of homeowners chose granite or quartz as the material for their countertop. Appliances can be costly to replace, which is why people might choose to update the items and finishes around it instead. The next most popular change to make was the backsplashes, followed by the sinks. Over 50 percent of the renovations involved opening the space up to lead into a nearby room.

In terms of style, contemporary took the top spot among users, while millennials tended to choose modern or farmhouse styles.

White cabinets and organizational add-ons (like built-ins or recycling cabinets) were also popular.
