Floating an old-fashioned rose in a shallow glass is a simple but lovely toast to summer. Especially when it's a deliciously perfumed David Austin English rose, whose short stem defies the usual plunk-'em-in-a-vase approach. Varieties that are especially effective for floating this way include yellow 'Graham Thomas', pink 'Heritage', and 'Molineux' (pictured). Snip blossoms with their stems attached, then trim the stems to fit in a glass of water. For an elegant arrangement, cluster three to five glasses of various sizes on a table.
