Make way for a unique trellis

Bare garage walls fronted by skinny planting strips cry out for greenery. In such situations, vines are the answer. But instead of supporting them with a conventional wood trellis, consider rebar. Landscape architect Christy Ten Eyck designed the one shown above for Russell and Lynne Kincaid’s home at the Anthem development in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Ten Eyck used 7 1/2-foot lengths of 5/8-inch-thick rebar. She evenly spaced the pieces a few inches apart, pounding the bottom of each one 15 inches into the ground. A concrete footing was poured along the trellis to anchor the pieces permanently. To stabilize the upper part, another segment of rebar was welded horizontally across the vertical pieces (weaving 1/4-inch wire would also work).

One Lady Banks’ rose was planted on each side of the trellis.
