Vintage American pottery forms the focal point of this space

Drawing on her study of painting, Valerie Murray designed this tranquil planting in her Victoria, British Columbia, garden. The centerpiece of her composition is a piece of vintage American art pottery that she bought at an auction. To echo the pot’s butter yellow hue, she planted Hosta ‘Frances Williams’, with broad, blond-edged leaves, and Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’), with arching yellow-and-chartreuse leaves. The solid green leaves of Hosta ‘August Moon’ pick up the chartreuse in the adjacent grass. A granite birdbath provides a rough-hewn contrast to the smooth pot. The planting is edged in front with a curve of beach strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis).
