These picturesque beds can be reached by someone in a wheelchair

Peggy Marshall designed these 24-inch-tall beds, flanking a surface of brick pavers, so they could be reached easily by someone in a wheelchair.

The sides of the beds are made from pressure-treated 6- by-6-inch timbers capped by 2-by-8s, which are wide enough to sit on. Marshall placed rock on the bottom of the beds, topped by a layer of gravel, a layer of sand, and 18 inches of light potting soil.

She grows low or trailing annuals like alyssum, lobelias, and petunias along the edges of the beds, with taller cosmos, poppies, and zinnias behind.
