Materials checklist

Set up a workspace for starting seeds 

It can be indoors, or out on a sheltered patio or porch. Cover the table with newspapers or a vinyl cloth. Fill a wheelbarrow or bucket with packaged seed-starting mix (you'll need at least 6 quarts per person). Moisten the mix so it's damp.

Containers, seed trays, and peat pots

Chopsticks or pencils

Trowel or scoop

Seed-starting mix

Extra seeds to share

Water-filled spray bottle

Wood markers or popsicle sticks

Permanent marking pens and envelopes to save leftover seeds

Extra containers or seed trays
