Showcase cactus

Desert beauties adorn this garden in Scottsdale

At this Scottsdale home, cactus and other desert succulents make excellent container plants and serve as sculptural elements in garden beds. They tolerate extreme temperature fluctuations, little water, and tricky northern exposures.

Their one demand is fast-draining soil; use a planting mix specially formulated for cactus.

For best effects, plant cactus and succulents in big, bold-looking pots, which look best with plants of substance and character. In garden beds, set cactus and succulents among flowering groundcovers, such as purple verbena or a sprinkling of wildflowers, for a soft counterpoint.
