The beauty of a wooded garden

Fern garden

This elevated fern garden, an 85th birthday present from garden designer and author George Schenk, makes good use of Short's old metal-framed table. Schenk calls it "a garden party of small growing ferns." To plant it, he covered the cedar-plank tabletop with a 7-inch mound of potting soil, then set in ferns, dwarf perennials and conifers, and moss. The result is a lush, floating garden―simply framed in gravel―that thrives in soft dappled light.
