Sporting intensely dark foliage, 'Tropicanna Black' makes its showy debut in nurseries this month. The colorful canna, which has rich chocolate brown foliage, sends up vibrant scarlet flowers from spring into fall. Leaves are especially broad for a canna, up to 12 inches wide, and the plant can reach 6 feet tall in the ground and 4 feet in containers.

'Tropicanna Black' blends particularly well in tropical gardens alongside other cannas, such as the two pictured, or with agapanthus, palms, and bananas. It's also a striking focal point. Like other cannas, it loves heat, especially near its roots; it grows next to sidewalks, driveways, patios ― and even in ponds.

Plant the canna in loose, well-draining soil and give it regular water.
