There may be no sure thing in the financial world, but luckily that's not the case in the kitchen. For a small outlay of time and money, homemade chicken stock yields consistently high dividends as a delicious base for soups, stews, sauces, and risottos.

To save up for stock, throw bones from roasted poultry or raw bones and scraps into a zip-lock plastic bag and freeze until you have a critical mass. It only takes five minutes or so to get homemade stock started and another few minutes to strain it at the end. While the stock is simmering, a warm kitchen is just one more return on your investment.
