Halloween is the perfect excuse to have fun with your food. While there are plenty of adorable Halloween treats for the occasion, you’ll need more than that to keep your energy high while the zombies, ghosts, and monsters take to the streets. It can be difficult to find Halloween snack ideas that the giants and little ghouls can agree on, but these sweet and savory tortilla bats are well-loved and trick-free.

Transform plain flour tortillas into a snack worthy of the night with a bat-shaped cookie cutter. You can also use a pumpkin, cat, or ghost shape for easy dipping. A rolling pin makes quick work of cutting through the tortilla, and leftover tortilla bits can be used in a bone-warming tortilla soup later in the week (so you don’t have to be overly careful about cutting).

To make savory bats, brush the tortilla pieces with olive oil before sprinkling the salted chile powder mixture over one side. For sweet tortilla chips, brush both sides with melted butter, but don’t season until they are removed from the oven. Arrange the bats on two rimmed baking sheets. Bake the bats until they are lightly golden, about 8 to 10 minutes. Turn the bats halfway through to evenly crisp them. The tortillas can easily go from golden brown to burned, so be sure to keep an eye on them.

As soon as the sweet bats can be comfortably handled, put the sugar and cinnamon in a small bag before shaking a few chips at a time to coat them. You can serve the sweet bats with chocolate sauce or with Greek yogurt mixed with honey for something sweet that isn’t candy or overly-sugared. The savory bats make a perfect Halloween party appetizer served alongside salsa, hummus, or a simple guacamole. You can also sneak a few into your kid’s lunch box on Halloween Day for a fun surprise come lunchtime.
