Growing mushrooms in coffee grounds: will the second try be the charm?

Remember that Back to the Roots oyster mushroom kit we started back in early January? I wanted to catch you up on what’s happening. Basically, my two sons and I didn’t realize you’re supposed to open up the flaps on the slits you’ve make in the plastic covering. So we were misting the outside of the plastic, and nothing was growing. (Sure, say “duh” if you want to.) We finally opened the flaps, but then the kit started turning orange and we figured we were creating a mold colony, so we stopped misting.

The mushroom log, starting to turn orangeNow Alex Velez, co-owner at Back to the Roots, has reassured me that the kit looks just fine. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder! He suggested we soak it again for 24 hours and give it another go.

We’re hopping for a good crop in 10 days or so. I’ll keep you posted.
